GLOSSARY

By-product

According to article art. 184 bis of the law 152/2006, it must not be considered refusal and to be such must be generated as part of a production process, but not be discarded, abandoned or eliminated,  moreover it must be destined for a subsequent production cycle or other industrial process, without the need for additional treatments, except those necessary to prepare it for use which must be specific and may not have intermediate steps that make it a refusal and/or a risk to the environment or health. In Emilia-Romagna the reference legislation is DGR n. 2260/2016.

Refusal

According to Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008, any substance or object that the holder disposes of or intends to dispose of is considered as a refusal.

Demonstrator

Is a model, system or prototype designed to prove, test or demonstrate a process or concept in a real-world setting. It is most used to show the feasibility, functionality, or effectiveness of an idea before scaling or complete implementation. It is often employed in research, development, and innovation to provide insights, gather data, and communicate potential benefits or applications to stakeholders.

Instar of insect

The period of an insect's life between two ecdyses.

Ecdysis

The process by which the insect emerges from its old cuticle.

Exuvia

The cuticle shed by an arthropod, including an insect, following a molt.

Molt

In arthropods, including insects, the renewal of the cuticle, typically accompanied by the shedding of the old one, which has become too tight (ecdysis).

Insect stage

Each of the distinct phases an organism undergoes during metamorphosis. In the case of Hermetia illucens, the stages are: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Only the larva has 5 instars.

Metamorphosis

The change in form, the transformation of the individual during development.

Adult

An insect that has reached full development.

Larva

The initial stage of holometabolous insects, significantly different from the adult, beginning with hatching from the egg and ending with pupation. An apodal larva is one that lacks legs.

Pupation

The transformation of the larva into the pupa, in the metamorphosis of holometabolous insects.

Pupa

In the metamorphosis of holometabolous insects, a quiescent stage intermediate between the larva and the adult.

Mouthparts

The set of oral appendages and some cephalic areas near the mouth opening, organized for food capture and ingestion.

Head

The first anterior region of the insect body.

Thorax

The second region of the insect body, located between the head and the abdomen, where the legs and wings articulate in adult insects.

Abdomen

The third posterior region of the insect body.

Chitin

A nitrogenous polysaccharide composed of N-acetylglucosamine units, a component of the cuticle of arthropods, including insects.
