Discover the Importance and Sustainability
of Hermetia in Emilia-Romagna
as part of the PNRR Ecosister project

Explore the potential uses of Hermetia illucens (BSF) larvae in the management of waste in the Emilia-Romagna region.
This platform connects agro-industrial waste producers with H. illucens breeders and other relevant stakeholders, facilitating the bioconversion of their by-products into value-added outputs and assessing the potential applications of larva-derived products within a circular economy framework.

The life cycle
of Hermetia illucens

Commonly known as the Black Soldier Fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens is an insect belonging to the Stratiomyidae family. The larvae of Hermetia illucens are particularly effective in the biodegradation process, as by feeding on organic material they accelerate decomposition and reduce waste mass, generating valuable primary and secondary products.

The products
of the BSF

Live larvae
They can be used as feed for certain farm animals.
Dehydrated larvae
They can be used as feed for livestock, pets, and aquaculture species; they are a rich source of proteins and lipids.
Proteins
They are extracted from the larvae and can be used in feed formulation as well as in the production of bioplastics.
Chitin
A natural polymer found in the exoskeleton of BSF, it has applications in cosmetics and biomedicine.
Frass
A nutrient-rich by-product obtained from BSF farming, which can be used in agriculture.
Lipids
They are extracted from the larvae and can be used in feed formulation as well as in bioplastics production.
